Gas Lock 1 (51)

Should lock-keepers learn to swim?…
“At an inquest held at Berkhamsted on Frederick Wells, lock-keeper at Lock 51 on the Grand Union Canal, Gossoms End, Berkhamsted, who slipped into the water from the lock gates and was drowned on Christmas Eve, it transpired that he was a non-swimmer, and the Coroner (Col. Lovel E. Smeathman) suggested that it should be compulsory for all lock-keepers to learn to swim. [His widow] said deceased, who was 59, had been the keeper of Lock 51 for nearly forty years.” (Buckinghamshire Examiner, Jan 1935).
